On International Human Rights Day… Stand Up for Justice!

Posted by migonyouth on December 9, 2009

On November 23, 2009, 57 people were brutally killed in the province of Maguindanao, Philippines in the most barbaric and politically-motivated killings in the history of the country.  The victims include innocent women, children, 2 lawyers and 30 media people.  The Philippines is now the most dangerous place in the world for journalists!

Enough is enough!  We need to demand to end all political killings!  We need to demand to end impunity!  We need to demand respect for human rights!  We need to say Never Again to Martial Law!  We need to:

STAND UP FOR JUSTICE!
Stop the Killings in the Philippines!
Never again to Martial Law!

Posted by migonyouth on December 6, 2009

Kamalayan Tuesdays:
The Ampatuan Massacre and Philippine Democracy
A Youth Focused Community Discussion

Tuesday, December 8, 2009
6:00pm – 9:00pm
Kapisanan Philippine Centre for Arts & Culture
167 Augusta Avenue, Toronto

The Ampatuan massacre last November 23 shocked the nation and the world. It was shocking not only because of its ferocity, claiming the lives of 57 innocent people including passers by, and barbarity, which included the rape of women, desecration of bodies and beheading of some victims, but also because of the brazenness in the commission of such abhorrent atrocities.” [Bulatlat.com]

So what the %$@! is happening in the Philippines? How does this affect us? And what can we do?

Join us TUESDAY, 8 DECEMBER at Kapisanan for this youth-focused community discussion about the recent massacre in the Philippines. We’ll be talking about:

  • The Ampatuan massacre
  • Electoral politics in the Philippines
  • The current president’s connection to the situation in Mindanao
  • Extrajudicial killings – Philippine deathsquads
  • Violence towards women in cases of political conflict
  • History of Mindanao and the Muslim people’s struggle for self-determination
  • How does this affect us? What options do the people in the Philippines have? And what can we do?

Kamalayan Tuesdays:
In the Name of Sugarcane/In the Name of Profit
In commemoration of the Hacienda Luisita Massacre

Tuesday, November 17, 2009
6:30pm – 8:30pm
Kapisanan Philippine Centre for Arts & Culture
167 Augusta Avenue, Toronto

Join us for “Kamalayan Tuesdays” a continuing series of discussion groups about Filipino and Filipino-Canadian issues. This series follows the visit of kabataan (youth) congressman Mong Palatino, and leading up to the youth festival in March 2010.

On Nov. 16, 2004, police and military brutally dispersed striking hacienda farmers and farm workers who were protesting the miserable take-home pay of P9.50 a day and the retrenchment of more than 300 workers tantamount to union-busting. The violent response of the government left 7 dead, 200 injured and 120 arrested. “Sa Ngalan ng Tubo” (In the Name of Sugarcane/Profit) is a 30-minute film which narrates the events and conditions that led up to the strike and the authorities deadly response to the workers resistance.

Migrante Ontario invites you to the first session of
KAPELOSOPOHAN (Kapihan at Pilosopiya)

Jose Rizal, Andres Bonifacio
and the Philippines

rizal-bonifacio

We have invited a couple guest speakers to help start us off, but it’s not really about the speakers at all, but about the participants sharing their questions, thoughts, and knowledge with each other.

Who were these guys?  Why are the considered heroes?  Why are they also sometimes considered less than heroic?  Why did they matter?  And most importantly why do they still matter today?

You don’t have to know a lot about Philippine history, or the Philippines today, you just have to be curious and eager to discuss.

Speakers:

Caroline Mangosing, a descendant of Jose Rizal’s sister Olympia will share what she knows about her ancestor.   Caroline is the Exec Director of the Kapisanan Philippine Centre for Arts and Culture.  www.kapisanancentre.com

Joe Rivera is a Toronto based writer, and former lawyer.  He will be speaking about Andres Bonifacio.  You can read his writing here:  http://letterfromtoronto.blogspot.com

Posted by migonyouth on August 19, 2009

kamayanThe anatomy of a Kamayan

DID YOU KNOW…
The traditional way (in the Philippines)
of eating is with the hands, especially
dry dishes such as inihaw or prito.
The diner will take a bite of the main
dish, then eat rice pressed together
with his/her fingers… Filipinos tend to feel the
spirit of kamayan when eating amidst
nature during out of town trips, beach
vacations, and town fiestas.  (Wikipedia.com)

Crispin Beltran Philippine History Lectures: Part III

Posted by migonyouth on March 11, 2009

Part III:  The Philippine Working Class Movement in the Era of U.S. Colonialism

The Commonwealth Government and Attempts to Divide the Union Movement; The Struggle against Japanese Occupation during WWII (1917-1945)

sugarmill_1910-19202Thursday, March 19, 2009
University of Toronto
Bahen Centre for Information Technology
Room 2135
40 St. George Street, Toronto
(map)

This next installment of the lecture series covers the latter part of the American colonial period and the period of Japanese occupation.

After the complete pacification of the Filipinos through the Philippine-American War, the American colonialists continued the repression of the working class by co-opting the ruling classes and established the Commonwealth Government. But even though the armed resistance was suppressed, Filipinos continued to organize through labour unions and community associations which clamoured not only for workers’ rights but also for national liberation, and eventually formed a working class party.

As the Second World War broke out, Japan invaded the Philippines and the United States retreated, leaving Filipinos to struggle against a new imperial force.

Some topics and personalities to be covered:

  • Crisanto Evangelista
  • Manuel L. Quezon
  • The Commonwealth Government
  • HUKBALAHAP
  • Gen. Douglas MacArthur’s famous promise: “I shall return.”

*Attendance at previous lectures is not a pre-requisite. A recap of major points from the first two lectures will be provided.

*This event is FREE and OPEN TO THE PUBLIC.

Presented in partnership with the Filipino Students’ Association of Toronto (FSAT).

For more information, contact migranteON.youth@gmail.com or (647) 239-6553.
